Working Diary

Stronger than the storm” – Lutz Van Dijk as an example of the complexity of the problem AIDS in South Africa

This page will help you to comprehend the way I worked on my “Facharbeit” and the strategy I used.

First week:

The first step consisted of collecting useful sources and to get closer with my chosen topic. Comparing sources and informing about the particular authors, I was able to differentiate between trustworthy sources and unreliable sources.

Second week:

After that I thought about how to create my table of content. Writing down several questions that arouse my interest concerning this topic, I eventually found a way to start my written work. And this is the final result of my table of content:

1.    Introduction of the topic

2.    Novel „Stronger than the storm“ – Lutz Van Dijk

2.1   The content

2.2   Lutz Van Dijk and his relationship to the  story „Stronger than the storm“

3.     AIDS – South Africa

3.1   Facts about AIDS in South Africa

4.     Literature in contrast to reality

4.1   Introduction

4.2   AIDS education in South Africa

4.3   Aid organization – HOKISA

4.4   African behavior concerning their religion in correlation with AIDS

4.5   Development of the official South African AIDS policy until today

4.6   Conclusion

5.    Reflection

6.    Bibliography

Third and fourth week:

In my opinion, having created the table of content was a significantly big step in producing my entire work. Completing the rest of my “Facharbeit” was now considerably easier by adhering to my table of content.

Last few weeks:

The weeks of correcting, shortening and almost becoming desperate. Although I thought most of the work was done I fastly had to realize that one of the hardest parts of the whole “Facharbeit” began. It was arduously to shorten and correct, every single paragraph and to select important contents from way more significant contents. But eventually, I got it and therefore I was very proud of myself.

But that does not mean that these six weeks were relaxing at all. There were many difficulties that showed off especially when one is not exercised in working with a computer. But even I made it to create a layout which I was absolutely content with. And as well, all these footnotes did not pose a problem for me after getting the knack of it.

But even though it sounds like not having to spend much time on it, it is completely the opposite. When these six weeks came to an end my intensity enlarged and I got to feel the uncomfortable pressure of time I had left. In those days, it became almost routine to fall asleep in front of the computer or to go to bed “accompanied” by the laptop.

After having finished one part after another, my satisfaction about myself rose and I felt motivated to continue the next part. And exactly this was the aim of my strategy to work on my “Facharbeit”: to always finish the whole text of the subitem I was writing about in one period of working time.

When I finished my entire work, I absolutely had to reread it several times. The problem of writing such a long lasting text is the consequence that I was so concentrated on the content of the “Facharbeit” that I did not realize all my linguistic mistakes anymore.
